Ballet companies all over the world perform The Nutcracker during the holiday season, each with a special take on Marius Petipa’s beloved classic. The Canadian School of Ballet returns to the Kelowna Community Theatre for their 34th year, featuring their dancers accompanied by principal dancers from the New York City Ballet.

The Nutcracker story was written by E.T.A. Hoffmann, set to music by Tchaikovsky and originally choreographed by Marius Petipa. With non-stop dancing and magnificent sets and costumes, The Nutcracker is an unforgettable tribute to the imagination.

The Nutcracker Story: A Family Favourite Christmas Tradition

It is a Christmas Eve party at the Stahlbaum home. A special guest, Herr Drosselmeyer arrives to charm the children with gifts and magic. Drosselmeyer gives his god-daughter, Clara, the special gift of a Nutcracker and a magical dream. As midnight strikes, Clara falls asleep and dreams of a battle between raging rats, mischievous mice and steadfast soldiers. The Nutcracker comes to life. Drosselmeyer takes Clara on a journey through a pine forest where Angels light the way to a winter wonderland.

The Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes Clara and the Nutcracker to her magical kingdom where they are enchanted by dancers from around the world.

Clara wakes to find it was all a wonderful dream that will stay with her forever.
